What Is the Tabla?
The tabla is one of the world's most expressive percussion instruments — a pair of hand drums at the heart of Indian classical, devotional, and folk music for centuries.
Two Drums, One Voice
The smaller dayan (right hand, treble) and the larger bayan (left hand, bass) produce an extraordinary range of tones and rhythmic expression.
Bols — the Language
Every stroke has a name called a bol. Students learn these syllables — dha, ge, na, tin — as the foundational vocabulary of all tabla playing.
